Mario Kart 8 Deluxe’s free 4.0.0 update introduces major new features for Nintendo Switch 2 players. The 2017 bestseller now supports eight-player split-screen, CameraPlay, and several visual and performance upgrades.

Nintendo has released a surprisingly substantial free update for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, a game that originally launched in 2017 and remains one of the company’s biggest sellers. Version 4.0.0 focuses on the Nintendo Switch 2 edition and expands both local multiplayer and communication options.

The headline addition is support for eight-player split-screen on a single Nintendo Switch 2. To use the feature, players need seven compatible legacy controllers plus at least one Joy-Con 2 or Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller. That setup turns one console and one television into a full local tournament.

The update also adds CameraPlay support. Locally, two to four players can appear on screen through a compatible camera, while online participants can use the function through GameChat. The goal is to make remote races feel more personal without changing the familiar structure of the game.

Technical improvements are included as well: the Nintendo Switch 2 version now delivers sharper image quality, higher resolution, and shorter loading times. None of these changes reinvent the racer, but together they make the long-running title significantly more attractive on Nintendo’s newer hardware.

The timing is noteworthy because Mario Kart World is still waiting for comparable post-launch attention. For now, however, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe players have received one of the most meaningful free updates in the game’s history.
