Their strategy game has been one of the biggest disappointments of 2025, but they’re not giving up and are now incorporating exciting new features into Civilization 7. The June update finally brings larger maps, game customization options, Steam Workshop support, and more.
Players haven’t been thrilled with Civilization VII. Hailed as Firaxis Games’ next big thing for 2025, the strategy title fell flat for much of the community, racking up hundreds of “Mostly Negative” Steam reviews over the past month. Still, the devs aren’t quitting—instead, they’re pushing out updates and new content, with the latest patch packing a set of additions that could win back more than a few lapsed fans.
Firaxis previously announced that Update 1.2.2 would arrive in June, and now it’s finally available—except for Nintendo Switch 2 owners, who’ll have to wait a bit longer. To tease what’s coming, the team published detailed patch notes outlining the major highlights and how these changes should impact gameplay.
Bigger maps. Update 1.2.2 introduces Big and Huge maps, letting up to 10 players compete in a single match (with an 8-player limit in multiplayer). The ultimate goal is to hit 12 players per map, but Firaxis wants to avoid any stability or performance issues first.
Custom games. Players now have much more flexibility in shaping their experience: toggle crises on or off, disable victory points, fine-tune AI difficulty, pick any civilization during Era changes, and more.
New bonuses for Religion, City-States, and Cities. Responding to player feedback, Firaxis reworked the bonuses for Religion and Cities, encouraging experimentation and more varied strategies across the board.
Firaxis Responds to Player Feedback
Firaxis Games has been paying close attention to fan comments ever since Civilization VII’s launch in February, and nearly every addition in Update 1.2.2 comes straight from community suggestions. The devs want to prove they’re committed to the strategy title and its players; time will tell if these and future patches can finally win over more positive reviews.
