That Franchise’s Future in Doubt: Microsoft Layoffs Put an End to an Xbox Legend?

The future of the 20-year-old Forza Motorsport franchise is now in doubt after Microsoft’s sweeping layoffs. All signs point to a long hiatus for this legendary Xbox series, with developer Turn 10 Studios hitting rock bottom.

It’s been twenty years since Forza Motorsport revolutionized the world of racing games, striking a balance between realism and accessibility and becoming a true challenger among driving simulators. Both Xbox and Turn 10 Studios pinned their hopes on 2023’s Forza Motorsport reboot, but the latest round of Xbox layoffs has devastated both the studio and the iconic IP.

Forza Motorsport on the Chopping Block After Xbox Layoffs

The future of Forza Motorsport is now at risk after Microsoft slashed its Xbox division, with layoffs hitting up to half of Turn 10 Studios. The remaining staff is severely reduced, and according to former developer Fred Russell, it may be years before we see another Forza Motorsport installment.

“Turn 10 Studios has closed its Forza Motorsport division and the team is no longer around. A very sad day for one of the best racing games around.” The Verge reports over 70 layoffs, with the remaining team now only maintaining the current Forza Motorsport. Windows Central confirms the series isn’t officially cancelled, but don’t expect anything new for a long while.

Turn 10 Studios to Focus on Forza Horizon Support

As Forza Motorsport fades to the background, Turn 10 Studios is shifting to help Playground Games support the Forza Horizon franchise, which is expected to see a new entry in 2026. Forza Horizon 5 has been a huge hit with over 35 million players and broader commercial success than Motorsport, even racking up millions of sales on PlayStation 5, while the most recent Forza Motorsport suffered from bugs and failed to win over the genre’s core fans.
