The new AMD upscaler on Sony’s mid-generation console update isn’t exactly the same as the one seen on the latest graphics architecture from AMD.
AMD FSR 4 running on the PlayStation 5 Pro promises to be more interesting than expected, judging by what a well-known insider recently revealed. On the NeoGAF forums, the trusted AMD insider Kepler_L2 wrote that the next version of the upscaler will arrive on PlayStation 5 Pro next year, and commented that the system will not be able to run the model seen on RDNA 4 GPUs (i.e., the AMD Radeon RX 9000 cards). Sony and AMD began working on the mid-generation console refresh before AMD decided to switch FSR to an ML model, and by the time that transition happened, the PlayStation 5 Pro had already been designed without FP8 support. So, it will be interesting to see how the system manages to run the full version of the upscaler.
However, those expecting games supporting AI-based PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) on the PlayStation 5 Pro to automatically support AMD FSR 4 without developer input may be disappointed. According to Kepler_L2, the current version of the PSSR upscaler does not allow for system-wide DLL replacement, so developers will most likely have to update already released games to take advantage of AMD FSR 4 when it becomes available for the system in 2026. This will likely divide the developer community: those who don’t care won’t do anything, while those who take things seriously will spend some time preparing and releasing a new update.
In addition to the AI-based PSSR, which has offered varying quality depending on the game, the PlayStation 5 Pro also offers other improvements over the base model, making it the most optimal system for enjoying PlayStation 5 games.
