Rumors are growing louder that one of 2026’s biggest fantasy RPGs could slip because of Grand Theft Auto VI, but Playground Games has now signaled, quietly yet clearly, that its plans for Fable have not changed. As things stand, Albion is still waiting in Autumn 2026.
The situation picked up real momentum because Jeff Grubb recently claimed that Fable had been internally delayed. Speaking on Giant Bomb’s Game Mess Mornings podcast, he said Playground Games may have pushed the title back in order to avoid launching too close to Grand Theft Auto VI, which is currently scheduled for November 19. In practical terms, that would open the door to a move into December, or even into 2027 if development ended up demanding more time.
Playground Games has not issued a direct public denial, but the official Fable account on X responded to an excited fan by saying that it was “excited to welcome you back to Albion in Autumn 2026”. It is a brief line, but it lands differently when it appears in the middle of a rumor cycle built around an alleged internal delay. Many players now see that post as a subtle way of shutting down the speculation, or at least as a clear sign that the studio is still publicly sticking to the same release window.
Xbox Is Not Afraid of Grand Theft Auto VI
There is no question that Grand Theft Auto VI is going to hit the release calendar like a meteor. No publisher wants to launch too close to Rockstar’s open-world giant, because that means fighting for attention and spending power against a game that will dominate both before and after release. Even so, Xbox has previously made it clear that it does not intend to rebuild its entire release strategy around Rockstar. Earlier this year, Xbox Game Studios head Craig Duncan said Rockstar would do what it had to do, while his own job was to make the best possible decisions for Microsoft’s games.
That makes the current Fable situation especially interesting, because it shows just how jumpy the entire industry has become in the shadow of Grand Theft Auto VI. Officially, Playground Games is still saying exactly what it said before: Autumn 2026. On the rumor side, however, the message is the opposite. For now, there is no hard proof that fully settles the matter in either direction, which leaves the usual standoff in place: an insider says one thing, and the studio avoids a direct argument while continuing to repeat the original plan.
The good news is that the wait for something more concrete may not be long. Microsoft has already confirmed that Xbox Games Showcase 2026 will air on June 7, followed by a Gears of War: E-Day presentation. That broadcast is expected to bring announcements, updates, and surprises tied to games coming to Microsoft platforms and Game Pass. So Playground Games now has a perfect opportunity to show Fable again and, if it chooses, finally put the delay rumors to rest.
