Assassin’s Creed Hexe: Saying Goodbye to One of Its Defining Elements?

According to one rumor, Ubisoft may have changed something fundamental, and that could completely reshape the Assassin’s Creed game it announced years ago.

The upcoming game was first revealed during the September 2022 Ubisoft Forward showcase, the same presentation that also confirmed Assassin’s Creed Mirage, Assassin’s Creed Red, Assassin’s Creed Infinity, and Assassin’s Creed Jade. In that crowded lineup, Assassin’s Creed Hexe stood out immediately. Its eerie setting and the cinematic footage of a hooded figure preventing the public burning of a woman accused of witchcraft gave the game a mysterious tone that many Ubisoft fans have been eager to see realized.

Some of the game’s elements, however, may be changing dramatically during production, especially after Assassin’s Creed Hexe creative director Clint Hocking left Ubisoft at the end of February without either Hocking or Ubisoft providing an official explanation. Then Benoit Richer, the game’s director, announced he was leaving Ubisoft to join Servo Games, leaving Jean Guesdon to take full narrative and creative control over Assassin’s Creed. Under his leadership, the upcoming title may undergo a major shift in both gameplay and narrative, because notable Assassin’s Creed leaker j0nathan has claimed that Guesdon is removing every mystical and magical element from the game.

Rumors from mid-2025 had already leaked a few details about the plot, which reportedly centers on a character named Elsa seeking revenge for her mother’s trial and execution on accusations of witchcraft. Other leaks suggested Elsa would possess certain supernatural abilities, including the power to possess a cat, allowing her both to distract guards and to access otherwise unreachable areas. According to the new information shared by j0nathan, that feature, and possibly other magical elements as well, were scrapped on Guesdon’s orders.

Guesdon has played a prominent role in several entries in the series. He joined Ubisoft Montréal in 2005 as a production coordinator and held that position on the first Assassin’s Creed. He later served as creative director on Assassin’s Creed Black Flag and Assassin’s Creed Origins, two games that are widely considered among the very best in the series. Reactions to the rumor have generally been positive, with many people seeing the removal of magic as a return to the franchise’s roots. On top of that, j0nathan also suggested that these recent decisions might even allow Ubisoft to move the release date forward.

He was also asked how much truth there was to rumors claiming Ezio Auditore could make a surprise appearance in the game, but he declined to comment and answered only with a smirking emoji.
