Fable: Will Playground’s Game Beat Grand Theft Auto VI To The Punch?

The studio behind the hit game Forza Horizon 6 has another game nearing release. Although the release of Fable has already been confirmed for 2026, many are wondering if it might be pushed back to 2027 due to the long silence surrounding the exact date and Xbox’s lineup this year, which includes the November release of Grand Theft Auto VI. While this is a real possibility, Playground Games recently reaffirmed its commitment to the 2026 release window in a new LinkedIn recruitment campaign: “After the incredible launch of Forza Horizon 6 this week, the excitement across the studio is sky-high. But we’re not done yet. With Fable coming later this year, we’re continuing to recruit across multiple disciplines to bring more exceptional talent into the team.”

The game has been officially rated in South Korea and Australia. In both countries, it was rated for mature audiences due to adult content. The South Korean committee explained its decision: “It’s an immersive, open-world, action RPG depicting the player’s adventure to resolve the situation in which villagers are turned to stone by an unknown stranger. It includes language that directly expresses sexual acts, frequent killing, bloodshed, and bodily mutilation using weapons; direct criminal acts based on user choices; and excessive vulgar and profane language. Therefore, in accordance with Article 21 of the Act on Promotion of the Game Industry and Article 7, Paragraph 4 of the Classification Regulations, it has been decided to classify it as ‘Not suitable for minors.’”

This rating is consistent with those of previous Fable games in these countries. More importantly, however, the ratings suggest that the game will keep its fall release date. Based on previous Korean ratings “leaks,” a release by late September or October is likely. Death Stranding 2: On the Beach was rated on February 6, 2025, and released on June 26. Nintendo’s Metroid Prime 4: Beyond was rated on July 25, 2025, and released on December 4.

This would be consistent with the intention of keeping the game as far away as possible from Grand Theft Auto VI. Take-Two, the game’s publisher, recently confirmed that it will be released on November 19. Last month, insider Jeff Grubb suggested that Playground and Microsoft might delay the game until 2027 if they cannot launch it before Grand Theft Auto VI. However, given the ratings and the recent hiring campaign, fans have reason to be hopeful.
