Artificial intelligence has arrived and made its mark. It will undoubtedly be here to stay. However, there is no doubt that it is impacting creative minds.
The widespread adoption of AI is having a massive impact on society, and artists are bearing the brunt of it as their original works are being replaced by average copycat products created by generative AI. While much of the industry’s attention is focused on the effects of generative AI on visual artists, game composers and musicians are being overlooked.
With the emergence of AI orchestras that are nearly indistinguishable from real ones to the untrained ear, the possibility that game music will also become mere copies, losing the unique magic that defines the entire gaming experience, is very real. WCCFTech spoke with Cédric Menéndez, lead composer of the Edge of Memories soundtrack and collaborator with Yasunori Mitsuda (Xenoblade) and Emi Evans (NieR), about generative AI and its impact on composers and musicians.
“I believe that viewing AI as a tool is a positive thing, but not as a tool for generating art. While it might be useful for rough drafts, the musical quality is still far behind that of real composers. And when it comes to vocalists, it’s even worse, in my opinion. I think people will soon move past this ‘AI hype.’ AI is simply a means for certain individuals to maximize profits by removing humans from the creative process, but that makes no sense. Art cannot exist without humanity,” said Menendez.
It’s hard not to agree with the composer of Edge of Memories. While AI can help in the early stages of the creative process, it can never replace a real person. Hopefully, more people in the industry will recognize what is happening and speak out against the current hype, which threatens to homogenize art in the worst way possible. After all, every person has emotions.
