TECH NEWS – Prices for the most in-demand products won’t stop rising, so neither memory nor storage will be cheap.
Due to the explosive growth of AI servers, PC enthusiasts are reconsidering buying new components because of the current high prices of graphics cards, DRAM kits, and SSDs. However, although the situation seems to have calmed down somewhat, one of the world’s largest memory and storage device manufacturers has warned that prices for certain components will continue to rise. Hermitage Akihabara recently interviewed TeamGroup CEO Gerry Chen about this issue.
TeamGroup does not manufacture DRAM or NAND flash. Instead, it purchases modules in bulk from SK Hynix, Micron, and Samsung. The company uses these chips to manufacture its own DDR5 kits and SSDs. This makes the company one of the first to feel the effects of limited supply. Since the process of turning raw modules into finished products isn’t perfect, TeamGroup’s production will be even more constrained. When the interview turned to PC and component prices, Chen didn’t have good news.
“Currently, demand for AI-related products is very high in the overall memory market, accounting for 40-50% of the total supply. We expect this trend to continue, and most of the memory produced between 2026 and 2027 has already been sold. The supply shortage is not limited to DRAM. NAND flash memory is also experiencing a similar shortage, creating a tight supply-demand situation across the entire market. Therefore, we believe the memory market will continue to experience supply shortages until 2028.
I believe prices will rise further. Although prices for server products have already increased significantly, prices in the general PC market are still relatively low. However, demand for AI and general-purpose servers is very strong, and prices are rising at a rate of about 30% per quarter. This trend is likely to continue for some time. The current general PC market is facing a challenging pricing situation, but if server market prices continue to rise, we believe there is a high probability that PC product prices will follow suit,” said Chen.
Therefore, if we are not going to purchase something now, we should wait at least two years.
