It’s a cliché, but there’s some truth to the idea that everything eventually comes to an end. Call of Duty: Warzone is no exception.
Alongside the unveiling of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, Activision confirmed that Call of Duty: Warzone will no longer be available for download on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One starting June 4. The game will be removed from both consoles’ digital stores, and it will no longer be playable when the first season of Modern Warfare 4 is released later this year. This marks the end of an era as Call of Duty officially transitions to the current generation. Earlier, it was confirmed that Modern Warfare 4 would not be available on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
Therefore, the decision to move Warzone off the old generation is not surprising, but arguably more significant than Modern Warfare 4 not being available on 2013 consoles. As an extremely popular free-to-play title in the Call of Duty franchise, Warzone has maintained a stable player base on both eighth- and ninth-generation consoles. This is especially notable since every ninth-generation console (including the Nintendo Switch 2, released last year) has seen a price increase.
The option that once allowed gamers to continue playing one of the most popular modern games at a lower cost is no longer available. Players who stuck with previous-generation devices must now upgrade their consoles and PCs at a time when prices are rising for a variety of reasons. The most significant factor for most gamers is the rising cost of memory, which Valve recently cited as the reason for the massive price hike of the Steam Deck OLED.
Call of Duty: Warzone will still be playable once it leaves store shelves next week, but it will no longer be available on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One with the release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4’s first season, which is expected shortly after or at the same time as Modern Warfare 4’s October 23 release.
