Eagle-eyed fans have already begun scrutinizing the materials released about the new expansion to Geralt’s story.
Set to release in 2027, 12 years after the base game, The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past takes players on a new adventure alongside Geralt of Rivia. Some fans have closely examined the expansion’s cover and discovered that it contains hidden information. In a new image shared on the series’ official Reddit subforum, user KvasirTheOld summarized his findings about the sword Geralt is holding. It is likely not his own because he carries his two swords on his back. The sword’s scabbard is almost identical to Ciri’s Zireael sword, differing only in one minor detail. The sword is likely a silver sword whose shape matches that of a few other masterfully crafted silver swords. The crossguard is also characteristic of silver swords.

Given these intriguing details, it’s reasonable to assume that The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past will focus on Ciri and how Geralt passes the torch, likely symbolized by the silver sword. This would align perfectly with rumors suggesting that the expansion is intended to bridge the gap until The Witcher IV, in which Ciri will be the main character. Interestingly, this isn’t the first time the sword has appeared in official game artwork. As Zubedoo noted, Geralt was depicted holding the sword in an illustration celebrating Belleteyn, the game’s spring festival based on the real-world Celtic festival of Beltane.

This festival holds special significance for Geralt in the novels of Andrzej Sapkowski, as he reunites with Yennefer at a similar festival during a break in their relationship. Following this encounter, Geralt finally accepts his fate and embraces Ciri as his own daughter. In an interview conducted by Paweł Sasko of CD Projekt RED (CDPR) ahead of the release of the Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty expansion, Sasko revisited the definition of expansions. “Big. Massive. Monster,” the actor described the expansion, so we can certainly expect something on a similar scale.
There’s no doubt that CDPR and co-developer Fool’s Theory will deliver a fantastic experience with The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past. Hopefully, it will keep fans engaged until the next installment in the series is released, although a release date has not yet been announced.
