Treyarch will port two of its older games, although another studio will help the team with the process; their release is not far away either.
After rumors circulated that remasters of Call of Duty: Black Ops and Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 were in development, Treyarch has revealed the actual situation. The first two games in the series will be ported to “PlayStation” in July thanks to the efforts of Iron Galaxy Studios. Treyarch announced this on its official Twitter account, without detailing what these ports will include and without describing them as true “remaster” versions. Instead, the studio simply stated that the original games will be ported to PlayStation in July courtesy of Iron Galaxy.

The remaster rumors began when two new ratings were discovered for both games, but since the word “Remastered” did not appear in the ratings, it makes more sense that they were connected to these ports. Although it is great news for PlayStation 5 players, and perhaps PlayStation 4 players as well, that they will soon be able to dive back into two of the most beloved Call of Duty titles in the series, this announcement leaves several unanswered questions, such as why ports for Xbox and PC, or at least enhanced versions of them, were left out of the announcement.
Nevertheless, this is another sign, after the Xbox Game Pass announcement of Call of Duty: Vanguard, that older entries in the series will try to fill the gap in Xbox Game Pass instead of the newest Call of Duty games. How do the new PlayStation versions of Black Ops and Black Ops 2 support the rumor about what to expect in Xbox Game Pass? These will probably be announced for Xbox Series as well, and then they could also appear in the Xbox Game Pass lineup. Although there does not seem to be a specific pattern here, the inclusion of Vanguard and the confirmation of these ports suggest that Xbox is slowly but surely expanding its subscription service with the older Call of Duty catalog.
After all, Xbox will need something from its own studios that it can add to its subscription service, especially since recent rumors about upcoming layoffs suggest that Xbox is significantly reducing its studio portfolio.
