Players Are Responding to Sony’s Decision by Canceling Their PlayStation Plus Subscriptions

Meanwhile, Sony has gone completely silent on social media when it comes to PlayStation.

Sony recently confirmed that it will no longer support the production of physical game discs from 2028. The news sparked an extremely negative reaction, perhaps even more intense than PlayStation expected.

As outrage over the announcement continues, many players have begun canceling their PlayStation Plus subscriptions in an attempt to boycott the decision. Some of PlayStation’s most dedicated fans have also spoken out on X against the latest announcement concerning physical games.

Several have confirmed that they have already canceled their subscriptions. The audience believes this sends Sony a message and draws attention to players’ grievances over the issue.

Amid the ongoing backlash, however, PlayStation appears to have remained silent on social media. Many people have also begun using YouTube videos to highlight the issue, urging fans to come together and send Sony a message through canceled pre-orders and subscriptions.

Comments below these videos increasingly mention players who have canceled their PlayStation Plus subscriptions. This can affect every tier, from Essential all the way to Premium.

Sony was once praised for its accomplishments in physical media, thanks to its role in pioneering the Blu-ray format. It even mocked digital game sharing in the past, but the situation today could not be more different.

Sony’s announcement confirmed that PlayStation 6 games will not be released on physical media. Reports suggest that the studios were also completely blindsided by the news.

A new survey indicates that more than 85% of players strongly oppose Sony’s decision to stop releasing disc editions of first-party games.

Digital Foundry’s YouTube poll gathered more than 74,000 votes, suggesting that a large number of players worldwide took part. An overwhelming 86% of voters asked Sony to reconsider the controversial decision.

Many users argue that discs still matter because they are tangible proof of game ownership. According to the end-user license agreements of many game publishers, digitally purchased titles are merely licenses that can be revoked at any time.

Some games may be removed permanently, while players may lose access to others for various reasons. Sony recently confirmed that it will close PlayStation Store on PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita in the near future, which is why physical media also matters for game preservation.

Many players are also threatening not to buy a PlayStation 6 if Sony does not reverse its decision.
