Gearbox Software may be joining the ranks of companies that remake old games instead of creating new ones.
According to a new rumor, Sony and Gearbox are in the early stages of discussing a project in which Bungie would develop a remake of Borderlands 1, transforming the original game into a Destiny-inspired, open-world, live-service shooter. The rumor originated on the 4chan forum, and a Destiny content creator named Trance has also discussed it. The Borderlands 1 remake would feature a customizable protagonist similar to the heroes in Destiny. However, the rumor doesn’t stop at the first game. Trance reported that Gearbox is also considering developing a remake of Borderlands 2 exclusively for the PlayStation 6.
“Bungie and Sony are currently in early discussions with 2K and Gearbox about remaking the original Borderlands as a Destiny-style looter shooter. From what I’ve been told, the project was pitched as an open-world game, similar to Borderlands 4, with seasonal paid content. The remake would move away from traditional main characters in favor of semi-customizable protagonists, similar to the system used in Destiny and Borderlands 4. If the deal goes through, Gearbox will also develop a remake of Borderlands 2 as a limited-time exclusive for the PlayStation 6,” wrote Trance.
As for his source, Trance claims he received the information from a colleague in the business development department at 2K. While this may seem unusual, Bungie is best known for its loot-based shooters, primarily those in the Destiny series. Assuming the rumor is true, this experience is likely the reason the alleged plan would transform Borderlands into a game with a greater focus on live services. Negotiations for the deal are reportedly in the early stages. Given how far away the release of the PS6 still is, we probably won’t hear anything about these projects through official channels for a while.
The timing of the rumor, however, is interesting. Bungie recently laid off nearly half of its workforce in June. While Marathon remains the studio’s primary project, speculation continues to swirl about the developer’s next project.
