The agreement between Sony Interactive Entertainment and Disney (the owner of Marvel) could end if Logan doesn’t perform as expected.
In December 2023, Insomniac Games suffered a massive data breach when hackers accessed the company’s internal documents. Among the leaked materials were the X-Men intellectual property agreements between Marvel and Sony. These documents provided a detailed look at Marvel’s expectations regarding the X-Men games. The documents revealed that the contract contains a clause allowing Marvel to terminate its agreement with Sony for future X-Men releases if Marvel’s Wolverine sells fewer than 6 million copies on the PlayStation 5 and PC in its first year. Marvel’s Wolverine has since been dropped from the mix.
For Sony and Insomniac Games to consider them a success, Marvel’s Wolverine and every other X-Men title released must sell at least 6 million copies in their first year. Therefore, the commercial performance of these titles is essential to maintaining the relationship between Sony and Marvel. If Sony withdraws from the agreement, the publisher must pay Marvel $9 million, in addition to its other financial obligations. Therefore, Marvel’s Wolverine must not only impress players, but also practically fly off the shelves if we are to see more X-Men games in the future. A leaked 2023 roadmap suggests that Insomniac is developing multiple X-Men games.
Unfortunately, Wolverine is already at the center of controversy. Both industry figures and players have criticized the game’s character design. The game has also been criticized for being too easy, and its monotonous combat system and mediocre story have also drawn fire. Wolverine is Insomniac’s lowest-rated original console game of the past ten years, with a Metacritic score of 77, as well as Sony’s lowest-rated PlayStation 5 game to date. For this reason, it may be difficult for the first X-Men title to reach this sales milestone.
Leaked information revealed that X-Men titles will remain exclusive to Sony for ten years. However, Logan may appear as a character in future Marvel crossover titles.
