We could jokingly call the game Call of Doom. Although it was never released, bits and pieces of it are slowly leaking out.
More concept art and animations from the canceled DOOM 4 have appeared online. DOOM 4 was later reworked to become the first installment of the reboot trilogy, DOOM (2016). DOOM 4 was announced in 2008 and was in development for several years before the project was ultimately canceled. Although id Software was able to incorporate some of the work done on DOOM 4 into DOOM (2016), much of the material had to be discarded due to the change in environment between the two versions.
Over the weekend, Twitter users @Runhob and @WadOverdose (who had previously shared unpublished material from the canceled first-person shooter) posted several animations and concept art from the game, including enemies, weapons, and more. Since the game’s rework, fans have uncovered numerous development materials. id Software also shared these materials in a Noclip documentary about the 2016 version of the game.

It looks like id Software interestingly reused a weapon model asset from the cancelled DOOM 4 for DOOM The Dark Ages: Revelations DLC (specifically one of the Flynn Taggart flashback sequences): pic.twitter.com/ApWUDDhNzS

Next doom game gonna be a retelling of Doom 1 and 2 that’s essentially a revived Doom 4 that’s more action horror instead of Call of Doomty

The release of the new development materials came after a difficult week for the DOOM developer. Last week, it was revealed that approximately 100 employees had lost their jobs as part of Microsoft’s large-scale restructuring. Following this, id Software stated that the studio has the necessary team to create the games and technologies for which it is known. According to The Verge, id Software is currently in the early stages of developing a new game, which aligns with Xbox’s strategy of focusing on its biggest franchises. (We’ve covered all of this in our news reports.)
In response to the layoffs, John Carmack, the co-founder of id Software, said he was saddened by the news. However, he acknowledged that, without knowing the full details, it was difficult for him to feel angry. He added that his previous comment that Microsoft would likely be a good steward of the brand no longer holds true. This will undoubtedly dampen the mood at the founders’ meeting to be held at QuakeCon next month. (We’ve written about this as well.)
