The Nintendo Switch 2 spin-off has now sold four million copies, despite the publisher’s leadership expecting no major breakthrough during development.
Pokémon Pokopia was one of the most important 2026 collaborations between Omega Force and Game Freak, yet Koei Tecmo did not regard it as a guaranteed success. CEO Hisashi Koinuma told Famitsu that the team wanted to create the best-selling Pokémon spin-off ever, but had little confidence in its commercial prospects before release.
“Before launch, we had no real expectations.”
The mood changed shortly before release, when international outlets played the game and responded very positively. That favourable reception quickly spread through social media, where players shared impressions and screenshots from its unusual Pokémon world.
The final numbers surpassed every internal estimate. Pokémon Pokopia sold 2.2 million copies in its first four days, and its total sales reached four million within a matter of weeks.
A Free Update and Three Paid DLC Packs Are Coming
Following that commercial success, the developers are preparing long-term support. A major free update arriving in August will introduce underwater exploration, allowing players to dive alongside their Water-type Pokémon.
A three-part expansion pass will begin at the same time. The first DLC adds furniture, clothing and Pokémon, the second will expand the game with new features in late 2026, and the third will open an entirely new village in 2027.
