The GreenVita Project Could Bring New Life to the PlayStation Vita!

Sony’s last dedicated handheld could gain new momentum with the help of modders. However, this doesn’t exactly play into Sony’s hands.

While it never became an extremely popular platform, there’s no denying that the PlayStation Vita was an impressive handheld when it launched in 2012, thanks in part to its tight integration with the PlayStation 3 and its beautiful OLED display. Although production of the handheld was discontinued a few years ago, modders are breathing new life into Sony’s latest handheld, which is rumored to launch soon. They’re transforming it into a portable Xbox with cloud gaming support, thereby ending the console war between PlayStation and Xbox in the most unexpected way.

GreenVita, developed by Day-OS, is a native client that allows users to stream games such as Halo Infinite and Forza Horizon 5 directly from the Xbox Cloud Gaming service to the PlayStation Vita. It leverages hardware-accelerated H.264 video decoding and the VitaSDK. However, GreenVita does not run on all systems. Users need a homebrew-compatible PlayStation Vita with VitaShell. Of course, they also need an Xbox account that provides access to the Xbox Cloud Gaming service through Xbox Game Pass Ultimate.

Since the project is in its early stages and the Vita is limited to 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, some issues are expected. However, version 0.1.8 already brings significant improvements, including enhanced streaming stability, recovery from a black screen, reduced frame drops and video glitches during streaming, and improved video frame transmission and system responsiveness. The GreenVita project for the PlayStation Vita is impressive in many ways. It showcases the potential of the now-discontinued system and the expertise of its homebrew community. It also serves as one of the best examples of cloud-based gaming by making old hardware usable for regular console games, even in 2026.

In a market where hardware prices are constantly rising, repurposing old hardware in this way allows users to enjoy current games to some extent without breaking the bank.

Still, she likes puzzle and story-oriented games, like Sherlock Holmes: Crimes & Punishments, which is her favourite title. She also played The Sims 3, but after accidentally killing a whole sim family, swore not to play it again. (For our office address, email and phone number check out our IMPRESSUM)
