Miami-Dade officials see GTA VI as a once-in-a-generation promotional opportunity, but the county’s sheriff and senior judges argue that turning the real city into Vice City would glorify exactly the crimes they work to prevent.
With Grand Theft Auto VI due on November 19, Rockstar Games is preparing a marketing push on a scale few entertainment launches can match. One of the most ambitious proposals has come from Miami-Dade itself, where officials have discussed transforming parts of the city into a live-action showcase for the game’s fictional state of Leonida.
The early ideas are deliberately eye-catching: wrap Metro trains in GTA VI artwork, install Vice City-inspired manhole covers, and temporarily adjust signage at Miami International Airport so arriving passengers feel as if they have landed inside Rockstar’s world. Supporters believe the attention could translate into a huge tourism and business windfall.
Law enforcement rejects the Vice City pitch
Miami-Dade Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz sees a very different message. She argues that the Grand Theft Auto series is built around robbery, drug trafficking, carjacking, murder and violence against police, making an official county partnership difficult to reconcile with the work of local law enforcement.
Commissioner Juan Carlos Bermudez has also objected to the possibility of temporarily renaming public infrastructure. In his view, Miami-Dade has spent decades presenting itself as a family-friendly destination and a serious place for investment, so it should promote the real city rather than a crime-soaked fictional version of it.
Courthouses could be kept out entirely
Chief Judge Ariana Fajardo Orshan has asked for every court-related facility in the county to be expressly excluded from any GTA VI or Vice City marketing, filming, branding and signage. The campaign has not yet received final approval, leaving Rockstar and county officials to decide whether the plan can be reshaped or must be abandoned.
Rockstar’s official site currently lists Grand Theft Auto VI for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with a November 19, 2026 release date.
