MOVIE NEWS – More than three and a half decades later, Tom Cruise is stepping back into Cole Trickle’s racing suit: Paramount Pictures has officially announced a sequel to 1990’s Days of Thunder. Fittingly, the news was unveiled at the world-famous Daytona International Speedway in Florida, since Cruise played a fearless NASCAR driver in the original film.

One of the sequel’s biggest attractions is Anne Hathaway (The Devil Wears Prada 1–2, Les Misérables, Interstellar, The Odyssey), who will appear opposite Cruise as the owner and engineer of a racing team. Cruise is also producing the film alongside Jerry Bruckheimer (Top Gun, Pirates of the Caribbean, Bad Boys) and Tommy Harper.

Jonathan Levine (Warm Bodies, 50/50, Long Shot) will direct the new Days of Thunder, from a screenplay by Will Staples. Paramount has not yet revealed what happened to Cole Trickle over the past 36 years or how he becomes involved with Hathaway’s character.

The studio has already emphasized, however, that the new Days of Thunder is being made specifically for theaters and will also be shot with IMAX cameras. That is hardly surprising: after the enormous success of Top Gun: Maverick, Cruise is returning to another of his cult roles in a film where speed and overwhelming spectacle may be just as important as the star himself.
