According to a new interview, Grand Theft Auto VI surpasses its predecessor in terms of scale.
Although the detailed presentation of the game, sponsored by Netflix, provided fans with the longest trailer yet, many questions remain ahead of its release. Fortunately, Rockstar is gradually lifting the veil of secrecy by speaking with select members of the press. During their studio visit, TroisCouleurs staff were able to try out the game and speak with Rob Nelson, the lead developer. Nelson revealed several interesting details, such as the size of Vice City and the number of cities players will be able to explore in Leonida.
Nelson revealed that the law enforcement mechanics are more complex than in previous titles and that Grand Theft Auto VI‘s world is significantly more unpredictable overall. Nelson noted later in the interview that development of the game began in 2015, although most of the team joined after completing Red Dead Redemption 2 in late 2018. One of Rockstar’s goals was to carry over some of RDR2‘s incredibly immersive gameplay into Grand Theft Auto VI, which goes even further in terms of interactivity.
“Vice City is twice the size of Los Santos, and the number of built-up towns outside the city is 11 times larger than in Grand Theft Auto V! You start way down in the Keys at the beginning of the game. That’s Jason’s little house that you see in the second trailer. Then, the game opens up, and you can go anywhere at any time. You can enter a huge number of buildings. They know what I’m wearing, but if I’m in a car and they didn’t see me get it, I should be able to pass. The law is much smarter, and the systems are much more sophisticated than in Grand Theft Auto V, so if you’re careful and keep moving, you can get away with it, which reinforces the narrative that it’s about a couple on the run. You can take your chances or be more careful. You can choose to be a more professional criminal or a loose cannon. How you play may impact some things. The world is also much more unpredictable. You’re not the only person with guns, and you’re not the only person capable of violence.
We wanted to bring the depth we added to Red Dead Redemption 2, as well as the ability to interact with the world in a more significant way, and the emotional connection people have with Arthur. How could we bring that into Grand Theft Auto? Because there is so much to do and so many ways to do it, it’s a very watchable experience. Hopefully, that will come across. This game has a far greater level of interactivity than Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2. There are roleplay elements for people who like that sort of thing. Safe houses, for example, are places where you should feel like you’re living,” said Nelson.
Hopefully, this more detailed preview won’t be the last we see of Grand Theft Auto VI before its release on November 19 for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series.
