Has Sony completely lost its mind? Hideo Kojima has been one of Sony’s crown jewels since Metal Gear Solid 3, but now they’re throwing that away!
Xbox Game Studios will publish Physint, the action-spy game announced by Kojima Productions in January 2024. This comes after Sony Interactive Entertainment made the difficult decision to pull out of the project. “After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to step away from collaborating with Kojima Productions on its project, Physint. We continue to have great admiration for Hideo Kojima’s vision for the game. Our relationship remains strong after three decades of industry-leading, genre-defining creative cooperation, and we look forward to continued close collaboration with Hideo Kojima and his award-winning independent studio in the future”, Sony Interactive Entertainment said in a widely criticized tweet.

“Creators have choices about where and how they bring their ideas to life. We’re honored that Kojima has chosen Xbox to collaborate with Kojima Productions on Physint. His ambition to challenge conventions reflects the kind of creativity we want to support at Xbox,” wrote Xbox CEO Asha Sharma on Xbox Wire. “This expands our relationship with Xbox beyond OD. As we move forward with the development of Physint, we remain committed to redefining the action-espionage genre for players around the world,” added Kojima Productions creator and founder Hideo Kojima.
The collaboration between Xbox and Kojima Productions extends beyond gaming; the two companies will also work together in film and television to bring new stories to a wider audience. The release date and platforms for Physint have not yet been announced. But that’s understandable, since OD is coming first for Xbox.

Later, in a tweet, Kojima shared more information about switching publishers: “As we confirmed earlier through our official channels, we unexpectedly received notice from PlayStation Studios in mid-June of this year that they would cancel the Physint project. Physint is an important project to me personally and to Kojima Productions. Determined to keep the project alive, we spent the last three months tirelessly searching for a new partner. In the process of seeking advice and pursuing negotiations with people from various fields, we found Xbox to be a partner with whom we share a vision for the future. We have decided to team up with them once again. Please rest assured that development of Physint, our genre-defining action-espionage title, is ongoing and will continue moving forward.”
Kojima was informed in mid-June. Then, on July 1, Sony announced that disc production would cease in 2028. It’s been a dark summer for Sony.
