The M5 MacBook Air is one of the most powerful machines available. Apple’s decision to offer the same portable Mac as a free replacement for a customer’s 2020 Retina MacBook Air reaffirms the tech giant’s legendary post-sales support. The older hardware wasn’t even the user’s primary machine; most of their workload is handled by the 14-inch M3 Pro MacBook Pro. The older MacBook Air’s battery was practically dead and needed servicing. Reddit user simalary44 mentioned that, since the 2020 model is classified as “vintage” on Apple’s website, the company might offer hardware repairs depending on the availability of parts.

Despite the odds being against him, the user called Apple Support. After being put on hold for a few minutes, a senior support representative told the user that he was having a lucky day because they were going to replace his machine with a 13-inch M5 MacBook Air featuring 16 GB of unified memory, a 512 GB SSD, and a 10-core CPU and GPU. Since the 2020 Retina MacBook Air was covered by AppleCare, the representative asked if it was okay to cancel the contract for the older Mac because the owner would receive a refund.

The photo proves that the Cupertino-based company fulfilled its part of the agreement. However, to take advantage of this, the user had to disable the Find My feature, sign out of iCloud, and erase all data on the Retina MacBook Air. Given that the base model with these specifications is currently available for $1,300, simalary44 certainly didn’t expect to be so lucky.

However, before we dismiss this as an isolated incident, it’s important to note that Apple has a history of putting the customer first. For instance, a 2018 MacBook Pro owner who requested battery service received a 16-inch M4 Max MacBook Pro, valued at $4,000, at no additional cost. Another customer had their 2019 Intel-based MacBook Pro replaced with an M5 version for free, which shows just how far Apple will go to retain customers.
