Capcom’s new Monster Hunter game, Wilds, has been steadily climbing the charts for a month now, and all signs point to it being as successful as World was when it was released…

Valve is open enough that anyone can view the top-selling games on the platform – that is, the games that store users have added to their wishlists. By their nature, these graphs are pretty stable; however, over the past few days, the more observant have noticed an exciting change: Monster Hunter Wilds has exploded to second place on the list!

Why is this so? Well, the game has had its own page on the Steam store almost since its announcement. But Gamescom 2024 did a lot to revive interest in it. Thanks to the playable footage presented via the live demo. The official Monster Hunter channels have been supplying ammunition without interruption since then.

All of this helps put the evolution of MH Wilds’ marketing campaign into context a bit, but the reality is that at the end of the day, the action RPG in question earned its prestigious position on its own merits. As an illustration, these are the most popular games on Steam right now:

After being ousted by Black Myth: Wukong when it hit stores in August, MH Wilds climbed from sixth to second place later that month, leaving behind many games coming to Steam, such as Frostpunk 2. Deadlock, meanwhile it’s off to a very strong start, but it’s considered a new contender since Valve only made its existence official a few weeks ago.

Will Wilds be the true heir to World?

Monster Hunter, let’s remember, is traditionally one of those Japanese IPs that has been “reserved” in the console environment. At least until the monumental release of World in 2018, which became the best-selling game of the company’s globalization practice. Since then, we’ve had several additional titles, including spin-offs and an MH Rise that was designed for Switch before we saw it on desktop. Thus, Wilds is the most direct heir of that World.

All in all, there were few surprises as Capcom ended last year by asking fans to “return to World” after a five-year hiatus, and that simple gesture brought the game back to the top of the charts. The sequel is highly anticipated and looks set to repeat the success of its predecessor on PC. The game will be released in 2025 for PC, Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5.
