Ubisoft has made an announcement that may surprise many fans. The developments in the Splinter Cell universe concern the long-awaited movie adaptation and the upcoming animated series. While fans have been eagerly awaiting new projects around the character of Sam Fisher, one long-planned project has officially been shelved.
The Splinter Cell franchise has been one of the most iconic espionage series in gaming, following the legendary adventures of Sam Fisher. Ubisoft has been working on various projects for years, including a remake highly anticipated by the community. However, one of the biggest projects, the Splinter Cell movie starring Tom Hardy, has now been officially canceled.
The Tom Hardy Movie That Will Never Be
Back in 2012, a Splinter Cell movie starring Tom Hardy and directed by Doug Liman was announced. However, 12 years later, almost no updates have been provided, and the production faced numerous issues and changes that stalled its progress. Ubisoft and New Regency initially planned to lead the project, but it ultimately failed to materialize.
Producer Basil Iwanyk confirmed the movie’s cancellation to The Direct, stating: “That movie would have been amazing… We just didn’t get it right, neither in the script nor in the budget. But it was going to be great. We had a million different versions, but it was going to be hardcore and amazing. That’s one that got away from us, which is really sad.”
Netflix’s Splinter Cell Animated Series in the Works
Although the film’s cancellation is disappointing, the Splinter Cell universe continues to expand. Netflix recently announced Splinter Cell: Deathwatch, an animated series featuring Liev Schreiber as the voice of Sam Fisher. The series promises a dark and intense spy thriller, with an official description teasing: “Darkness is a good thing. Once you get used to the shadows, you see bad people for who they really are. And they’ll never see you coming for them.”
