This is what the new Star Wars: Skeleton Crew series will be about

MOVIE NEWS – In December, we can once again journey to a galaxy far, far away, as the Star Wars universe expands with a new series. Star Wars: Skeleton Crew tells the story of a group of kids who make a mysterious discovery on their seemingly safe planet, only to get lost in a strange and dangerous galaxy. Along their journey home, they encounter unlikely allies and foes, making the adventure bigger than they could have imagined. While the plot centers on children, don’t expect a light comedy—the tone will be darker than anticipated. Disney+ has now compiled every detail we know about the series ahead of its December 3 double-episode premiere.

Although the exact plot and location remain unknown, the timeline is anything but. The series takes place during the era of The Mandalorian and Ahsoka, a few years after Return of the Jedi and long before the rise of the First Order. This further enriches the storytelling of this period, introducing new characters. The era will eventually conclude with Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau’s epic film, The Mandalorian & Grogu.

The adventure begins with a discovery…

The creators have deliberately teased information about the series, leaving even the most dedicated fans guessing. Based on official trailers, we know that a daring group of kids—Wim, KB, Fern, and the elephant-faced Neel—stumble upon an old Republic smuggling ship, the Onyx Cinder, which they accidentally activate. This ship transports them to a galaxy unfamiliar to them but recognizable to us.

While the series is set in a significant era for the galaxy, the New Republic period, the children’s story unfolds in the Wild Space. This setting is particularly intriguing because, while Din Djarin roams the galaxy with Grogu, Boba Fett collects bounties, and Ahsoka searches for Ezra, the characters of Star Wars: Skeleton Crew will be less familiar to fans. Instead of visiting iconic Star Wars planets, they explore unknown worlds, encountering strange creatures, space pirates, and droids—including a battered SM-33 unit.

The 80s vibe

The series is steeped in an 80s vibe, which appealed to both the protagonists and the creators. Nostalgic elements reminiscent of kids’ movies from that era are reflected in the camera movements, practical sets, effects, and music. The Onyx Cinder spaceship, for instance, was entirely built and meticulously detailed down to the last bolt. Similarly, droids and creaky sound effects were carefully crafted. The music features the distinctive styles of the 80s. The treasure hunt at the story’s heart sounds thrilling, and while children are the central figures, don’t expect a light-hearted comedy. According to series creator Jon Watts, the tone will be darker than anyone expects.

The Force is with him. But how?

Many questions surround Jude Law’s character, Jod Na Nawood. Trailers suggest that Wim, KB, Fern, and Neel rescue him from a Wild Space prison, and it’s hinted that Nawood is Force-sensitive. But if he’s truly a Jedi, who was his master? Where was he trained? Did he have any ties to the Jedi Order, or did he somehow become a Jedi after Order 66?

Oscar-nominated Jude Law didn’t answer these questions in an interview but revealed that Nawood is a complex, morally ambiguous rogue who serves as a big brother, father, teacher, and student to the children. In many ways, he’s as lost as they are. Having never had a childhood, he views the kids as little adults.

Other notable roles include the infamous Nikto pirate Vane (Marti Matulis) and his crew, while Oscar-nominated actress Kerry Condon plays a mysterious yet significant character. Which characters will appear in the Wild Space of this galaxy far, far away remains a secret, but it’s not entirely certain that we’ll miss out on cameos. The “Mando-era” series regularly feature crossover episodes. In fact, Jon Favreau, producer of The Mandalorian, has already hinted that elements of Star Wars: Skeleton Crew could make their way into The Mandalorian Season 4.

The next chapter in the galaxy far, far away will premiere on Disney+ a day earlier than the original release date, arriving on December 3 with a double episode.
