Nintendo Switch: Very Popular RPG Disappears from the eShop – Will It Return?! [VIDEO]

It’s a bit of a bummer that its removal could also mean that the previously Nintendo Switch-exclusive RPG will be coming to Xbox and PlayStation…

One of the best RPGs (and exclusives) for the Nintendo Switch has recently been removed from the Nintendo eShop – and there’s currently no official explanation as to why.

Triangle Strategy was released back in 2022 and was well-received by critics, earning a very respectable 83/100 on Metacritic. The game was co-developed by Square Enix and Artdink, but the publishing rights are a bit more confusing. While Square Enix published Triangle Strategy in Japan, Nintendo published it internationally.

Let’s just say, if you haven’t heard of Artdink, you need to fix that right away! They’re one of the weirdest, most wonderful development teams around. Dungeon Chill did an hour-long deep dive on them on YouTube, which is worth checking out. (See the video below.)

Triangle Strategy has disappeared from the Nintendo eShop for some currently unexplained reason. Even more strangely, Square Enix took to Twitter to comment on the removal – but didn’t elaborate.

“Triangle Strategy is temporarily unavailable to purchase on the Nintendo Switch eShop. Those who have already bought the game will be able to download it,” Square Enix said.

“We are working on this and will update when the game is able to be purchased again.”

The whole thing is a bit vague, unfortunately. One commenter does have a pretty good theory about the removal, though.

“They did the same thing with Octopath,” commented YouTuber @EndymionYT – “They transferred the publisher from Nintendo to Square Enix, then coincidentally after this happened, Octopath 1/2 came to other platforms.”

“TLDR: Expect a Triangle Strategy announcement in 2025 for the game to hit PS4/5, Xbox etc.”

Endymion hit the nail on the head. Octopath Traveler was a Nintendo Switch exclusive that Nintendo released outside of Japan until December 2023. Although Octopath Traveler landed on Xbox and Windows before the publisher change, it didn’t come to PS4 and PS5 until 2024.

Hopefully, this is the reason Triangle Strategy was removed from the eShop, because that would be the best possible outcome of the whole thing. (And if it were to be made available again for Switch players within a certain timeframe…)
