Nvidia GeForce RTX 5000: Embargo Lift Date Means More Waiting Ahead!

TECH NEWS – It’s still a while before the press can officially report on the two top models of the Blackwell architecture, and it’s official that this time there will be a “50” GPUs in laptops.

According to Videocardz, the GeForce RTX 5090 graphics card will be the first to report test results to the press, but so far we have heard the opposite. According to the publication, the RTX 5080 received a one-week delay because the BIOS for the card was released in the last week of December, which caused manufacturers to adjust their plans to ensure that the GPUs were properly supported at launch. The RTX 5090D, a model for the Chinese market, will also end the embargo at the same time as the RTX 5080.

Unlike Intel, there is no need to wait for evaluations of models from other manufacturers, so there will be no advantage for reference cards. And the dates: the GeForce RTX 5090 will be available for public evaluation by the press in written or video format from January 24th, and the RTX 5080 and RTX 5090D from January 30th. So we’ll have to wait another week and a half before we officially hear the results of the two Blackwell cards.

At CES 2025, Nvidia also talked about its RTX 5000 laptop chips, but the RTX 5050 and RTX 5060 were not a big hit. Now, however, we read on Twitter that one of LG’s laptops, the 2025 Gram, will be available with the RTX 5050, but only later, as the RTX 4050 will be built into the laptop first. Reportedly, Nvidia also planned to showcase the RTX 5050 at CES, but changed its plans. However, considering that the Gram 2025 will initially come with the older GPU, we can expect pin-for-pin compatibility, so it will physically connect to the motherboard in the same way, and its power consumption will not be significantly different, so LG can quickly replace the GPU.

The laptop version of the RTX 5050 gets 8GB of GDDR6 (?) VRAM on the GB207 GPU, and that’s all we know about it (is GDDR6 a typo?). The laptop version of the RTX 5060 will keep pace with the laptop release of the RTX 4070, so maybe the new RTX 5050 will be able to match the RTX 4060 in performance, but that’s not official yet!
