MOVIE NEWS – “What he did with this film was a masterpiece.” Hollywood struggles to explain the injustice against Dune 2‘s director at the Oscars. Josh Brolin and Chris Miller (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse) defend Denis Villeneuve’s exceptional work, which went unnoticed by the Academy.
Once again, the Oscar nominations have sparked controversy. With only five nominees per category (ten for Best Picture), prominent absences tend to grab headlines. This time, Denis Villeneuve finds himself overlooked for his work on Dune 2.
“This doesn’t make sense to me”
Although the sci-fi epic has received five nominations – including Best Picture of the Year – the Canadian filmmaker was ignored in the Best Director category. Josh Brolin, one of the stars of the film, expressed his frustration in an interview with Variety:
“Apparently, I’ll have to quit acting because Denis Villeneuve wasn’t nominated. Is that how this works? This doesn’t make sense to me. Joe Walker (editor) and Denis deserve it. It’s an incredible movie. Even better than the first one. Those who received recognition surely deserve it. I’m just happy to have been part of this. Congratulations to everyone.” – said Brolin.
Chris Miller, producer of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, was even more generous with his praise: “There were many films this year with great direction, but what Denis did, in every aspect, was a masterpiece.”
As Jonah Hex actor Brolin also pointed out, Dune: Part 2 has been nominated for Best Cinematography, Best Sound, Best Visual Effects, Best Production Design, and Best Picture. That makes it five nominations, half of what the first installment of the sci-fi saga achieved three years ago.
Denis Villeneuve might still win the Academy’s favor with Dune: Messiah. Perhaps, much like Peter Jackson with The Lord of the Rings, the third installment will be where awards start pouring in. Let’s not forget that Jackson won Best Director in 2003 for The Return of the King.
