Could the Next God of War Be a Prequel Story? [VIDEO]

According to a rumor, the God of War IP may be taking a new direction based on Greek and Norse mythology.

Kratos’ tale of revenge in the original God of War trilogy is now considered iconic. With the release of God of War on PS3 in 2010 and remastered for PlayStation 4 a few years later, that story was largely complete, and then came a prequel story in 2013. That was God of War: Ascension, and then Sony Santa Monica Studio did a soft reboot of the franchise, as the 2018 God of War was set in Norse mythology, and Kratos already had a son, Atreus. That saga ended in 2022, however, when God of War: Ragnarok brought those adventures to a close.

Where does Kratos go from here? Fans guessed Egypt, but in the video embedded below, during the Insider Gaming Weekly podcast, Tom Henderson, a trusted insider, spoke to the contrary. According to him, Kratos is not moving his headquarters here, but is preparing for another Greek adventure. The twist is that Kratos will be much younger, so the story of this game will take place earlier than God of War: Ascension. The story will reportedly be based on Kratos’ relationship with his father, which (given the events of God of War 3) doesn’t seem like a big surprise.

Henderson could not confirm if this will be another prequel story or if the game is related to the rumored God of War 20th Anniversary remasters. He may have information about a remaster, and since he’s not too sure about what he’s heard either, it all sounds pretty confusing at this point. If Santa Monica Studios is indeed taking Kratos back to Greece, they may end the story after the events of God of War 3, as it’s still unknown how Kratos ended up in Midgard. The 2021 God of War: Fallen God comic has already hinted at an Egyptian detour in this interim period, so Santa Monica Studios has plenty of material to work with.

But it’s not official yet!
