Is Konami About to Reveal a New Castlevania Game?

Last fall, Konami finally managed to score a hit with a game that wasn’t a re-release collection or pachinko, and the Japanese company wants to build on that.

The Castlevania IP hasn’t been very brilliant in terms of NEW games lately, as there hasn’t been much of that in the last few years. But in the meantime, the franchise is still well known. Well, not because of the collections, but because an animated series debuted on Netflix in 2017, and after four seasons, Castlevania: Nocturne picked up the baton.

Given their success, it’s no surprise that Konami (buoyed by the fact that the Silent Hill 2 remake did well) is planning a new game. On Twitter, Daniel Camilo wrote that four major announcements are certain this year. He also wrote a fifth, but it’s so obvious that he treats it as a joke (EA Sports FC 26). He says that this year will see the announcement of a new Tomb Raider, a Fire Emblem remake, a sequel to NieR: Automata, and a new AAA Castlevania game. He emphasized that the rumors are coming from different sources and while they are reliable, they should not be believed 100%.

The Castlevania series, along with Metroid, is a pioneer of the Metroidvania genre (not surprising, since that’s the name of both IPs). Both franchises played a crucial role in popularizing non-linear exploration, backtracking (getting to a location but not being able to fully explore it until later), and skill-based progression, developing a formula that has arguably influenced countless games. Castlevania is known for its dark themes, good, creepy aesthetics, gothic storytelling, and especially its depiction of vampires, although it’s true that vampires (with Dracula and Alucard at the forefront) don’t appear in every game. Anyway, it’s really about time for a big budget new Castlevania, as it’s been over a decade since the two Lords of Shadow titles were released.

This is all unofficial!
