Spanish authorities have intensified their fight against video game and movie piracy, leading to the shutdown of six illegal distribution websites and the arrest of three individuals. The suspects, who operated a network profiting from pirated content, amassed over 1.1 million euros before being taken down.
The Spanish National Police have successfully dismantled a large-scale piracy operation that illegally distributed video games, films, TV series, and other entertainment content. This crackdown resulted in the closure of six illicit websites and the arrest of three individuals in Cartagena (Murcia), Coria del Río (Seville), and Móstoles (Madrid). The suspects had reportedly accumulated over 1.1 million euros through their illegal activities.
Illegal Network with Over 16,000 Users
According to the official statement from the National Police, those arrested specialized in intellectual property crimes and used stolen identities and fake documentation to hide their activities. Their operation funneled profits from illegal websites into a cryptocurrency mining farm, generating an additional 6,000 euros per month.
The illicit websites were operated from Cartagena, where the main suspect resided. Their primary focus was on selling unauthorized IPTC subscriptions, which granted users access to pirated movies, TV series, live football matches, and video games. With more than 16,000 registered users, the network had been raking in millions before law enforcement intervened.
Authorities Seize Cash, Crypto, and High-End Equipment
The investigation began in 2022 after multiple complaints from entertainment industry organizations. This led to a coordinated raid on the primary suspect’s home, resulting in significant seizures. Authorities confiscated 72,000 euros in cash, cryptocurrency assets, a luxury vehicle, and high-performance computer hardware used to facilitate illegal operations.
The Spanish police continue their aggressive stance against digital piracy, warning that further crackdowns on similar operations are expected in the near future.
