MOVIE NEWS – After the long silence following Obi-Wan Kenobi’s 2022 debut on Disney+, a credible new rumor hints at a long-awaited Season 2. Ewan McGregor could return as the galaxy’s most famous bearded Jedi, but details remain vague for now. While the first season’s reception was mixed, many fans are already gearing up for the possible return of Obi-Wan in fresh episodes.
Star Wars fans might be journeying back to a galaxy far, far away with their favorite Jedi. Ever since Season 1 of Obi-Wan Kenobi landed on Disney+ in 2022, news about the series has been virtually non-existent—until now. According to a fresh rumor, a second season is actually in the works, with Ewan McGregor expected to reprise his legendary role.
According to insider Daniel Richtman, Obi-Wan Kenobi Season 2 is currently being developed. No further details have leaked, and until anything is confirmed, fans should take it all with a grain of salt. That said, McGregor himself has repeatedly said he’d be keen to return as Obi-Wan, which adds credibility to the rumor. The first season earned an 82% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, but only 61% from viewers—a figure likely impacted by review bombing, much like the recent case with Ironheart.
When Obi-Wan Kenobi premiered in 2022, Disney+ pitched it as a limited series for awards season, eventually scoring an Outstanding Limited Series nomination at the 2023 Primetime Emmys—though the trophy went to Netflix’s acclaimed anthology Beef. If Season 2 does materialize, it wouldn’t be the first “limited” miniseries to come back for more, especially considering Lucasfilm has recently shifted focus to new projects. The fact that three years have passed makes a Kenobi return all the more surprising.
It’s worth noting that Obi-Wan Kenobi wasn’t always planned as a streaming series. Screenwriter Stuart Beattie (Collateral) originally pitched a trilogy of Obi-Wan movies during Disney’s early Star Wars era. The idea evolved as Lucasfilm repositioned the story for Disney+, which launched in 2019. In an interview, Beattie described how the project developed while Lucasfilm was “busy with Rogue One and Solo: A Star Wars Story.”
“When Disney took over, I assumed they’d want to make an Obi-Wan film since that’s what everyone wanted, but I wasn’t hearing anything. So, I started coming up with my own ideas and pitched them to Lucasfilm. That’s what actually got things moving, as they were occupied with Rogue One and Solo: A Star Wars Story at the time. In the initial meeting, they asked if it was a movie or a show, and I said it was a film—in fact, I had three movies mapped out. It wasn’t until a year later that they suggested making it a series,” Beattie recalled.
