Takashi Iizuka, current head of Sonic Team, has made it clear that fans shouldn’t expect modern versions of the two Dreamcast classics anytime soon.
Sonic Adventure (1998) and its sequel (2001) remain two of SEGA’s most beloved 3D titles, partly because they were the first in the franchise to introduce open-world gameplay. In a recent interview with Shack News, Takashi Iizuka—director of both games—was asked whether remakes or remasters could be on the horizon. His answer leaned firmly toward creating new content instead.
“I really appreciate everyone who loves the Sonic Adventure series. But when I think about how much effort it would take to bring that game up to today’s standards and expectations, I realize it would require just as much time and energy as making a brand-new title. So part of me feels like maybe I should just make something completely new, which is why there are currently no plans,” Iizuka explained.
Back in 2022, VGC asked Iizuka about a potential Sonic Adventure 3. At the time, he admitted he liked the idea but was focused elsewhere. “In the future, yes, Sonic Adventure 3 is an idea that could be interesting to explore. But it’s not part of the plan right now, and it’s not what I’m doing. Everything right now is focused on Frontiers, and there are no plans for Sonic Adventure 3. I just want to be totally clear on that. But yes, as someone who worked on Sonic Adventure 1 and 2, the thought of doing a third game is in my head as something to maybe consider someday,” he said.
For now, the future of Sonic Adventure appears to be stalled. With both games showing their age and suffering from various limitations, there seems to be little momentum for a revival.
