Thanks to The Conjuring franchise, everyone knows the story of the cursed Annabelle doll—but now, the real-life artifact is making headlines for tragic reasons. Paranormal investigator Dan Rivera, 54, died unexpectedly while guiding the New England Society of Psychic Research’s Annabelle tour, his passing coming just after a Gettysburg, PA stop. NESPR’s Chris Gilloren announced on Facebook: “It’s with deep sadness that Tony, Wade, and I share the sudden passing of our close friend and partner, Dan Rivera. We are heartbroken and still processing this loss. Thank you for your support and kind thoughts during this difficult time.”
According to E!News, authorities responded to a hotel call on July 13 reporting CPR on a 54-year-old man. An official cause of death is pending as the coroner’s office completes its report. NESPR had hosted its Gettysburg show the day before Rivera’s passing. Rivera had spent over a decade in paranormal research after serving in the U.S. Army. Our condolences go out to his family and friends.
The Annabelle Legend Grows
Rivera’s tour brought the original Annabelle doll out of its usual home in Ed and Lorraine Warren’s Occult Museum in Monroe, Connecticut, where the Warrens keep their most infamous paranormal artifacts. The Annabelle legend dates to 1968, when a nursing student was given a ragdoll that quickly became a source of strange phenomena. As described in the NESPR case files: “Almost immediately, the roommates noticed strange occurrences with the doll and they were introduced to a medium who told them the doll was inhabited by the spirit of a young girl named Annabelle. The two roommates tried to accept the doll’s spirit and please it only to have it reciprocate maliciousness and violent intent.”
The “Devils on the Run Tour” promised guests a “chilling encounter” with the seemingly ordinary doll that has “reportedly caused misfortune, injury, and even death to those who have interacted with it improperly.” Rivera’s sudden death now becomes part of Annabelle’s growing lore, and for many, his connection to the doll during the tour will seem like more than mere coincidence.
