Benedict Cumberbatch Slams Marvel’s Waste: This Is What Bothers Him Most on Doctor Strange Sets [VIDEO]

MOVIE NEWS – Benedict Cumberbatch has spoken out about the “grossly wasteful” production practices on Marvel movies. The actor revealed that not just sets, but food, energy, and even his extreme superhero diet were wasteful. Despite his criticism, he’s not ready to give up playing Doctor Strange, but he hopes Hollywood will finally change.

Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) isn’t currently set to appear in Avengers: Doomsday, but the character is expected to return to the MCU soon. Cumberbatch hopes that by the time he’s back as Strange, one major issue will have been fixed behind the scenes. The British actor first donned the cloak in 2016’s Doctor Strange, and has since returned for Infinity War, Endgame, and the much-maligned Multiverse of Madness. He says the intense prep for superhero roles—especially the diet and bulking up—was “grossly wasteful.”

Speaking on the Ruthie’s Table 4 podcast, Cumberbatch reflected on his time with Marvel and on the set of Wes Anderson’s new film. While he enjoyed playing Strange, he didn’t hold back about how wasteful Marvel and Hollywood are: “It’s a grossly wasteful industry.” He cited set building, transportation, food, housing, and even energy as sources of waste, and called his extreme bulking diet over the top: “What am I doing? I could feed a family with the amount I’m eating to bulk up.”

Will Doctor Strange Return?

Cumberbatch might dislike Hollywood’s sustainability, but he’s not leaving Doctor Strange behind just yet. While he won’t be in Avengers: Doomsday, many expect the Sorcerer Supreme to make his comeback soon. There are even rumors that the current cast list is just the beginning, and more big names will be added in the months ahead.

His last MCU appearance was in Multiverse of Madness, which received heavy criticism despite the inclusion of Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) and America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez). Not even Sam Raimi’s directing could save what fans called a weak script. Still, the film’s ending teased another return for Strange—maybe in a third solo film. If he skips Avengers: Doomsday, most expect his comeback in Avengers: Secret Wars (December 2027).
