Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 3 is closer than you think — Hamaguchi says development is “going extremely well”

The director of Final Fantasy VII Remake is once again reassuring fans. Naoki Hamaguchi says that “development is going extremely well,” and Square Enix is now focused on “perfecting every last detail.”

It’s been over a year since the release of Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth, and fans are already asking Square Enix how the trilogy’s final chapter is progressing. The team has been working quietly, sharing little about the next adventure, which has made many players anxious about the project’s future. That’s why the director of Final Fantasy VII Remake has stepped forward to reassure everyone that development is on track and there’s no need to worry. In fact, the team has made significant progress in recent months.

Naoki Hamaguchi addressed the subject in an interview with Automaton, where he outlined, at least broadly, how far Square Enix has come with the third entry. “Development is going extremely well, and the game is really starting to take shape,” he said. “A lot of the content is already playable, and both the game’s direction and its structure are clearly defined. Right now, the team is working together to perfect every detail.”

In short, Square Enix has shared a new update on the status of the third installment of Final Fantasy VII Remake to put fans’ minds at ease. Although the company had previously emphasized that this project is a top priority, many players became concerned after seeing the initial sales numbers for Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth. In fact, the developers have confirmed that production is going so smoothly that they have already set a date for the game’s official announcement.

For now, we’ll have to wait for more news from Square Enix to learn additional details about the third part of Final Fantasy VII Remake. Even so, Hamaguchi encourages players to revisit Cloud and company’s journey in the current releases: “For new players discovering Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade on Nintendo Switch 2 or Xbox Series X|S, I would love for you to enjoy that experience first and then play the second game while waiting for the third installment.”

Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth is performing strongly on PS5 and PC

Regarding Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth’s commercial performance, Hamaguchi used the interview with Automaton to highlight that “the second installment is performing very well on both PS5 and PC. I know some fans are worried, but they can rest assured that we will deliver a proper, high-quality third part.” His comments refer to the fact that the game did not initially meet sales expectations on PlayStation. However, the situation changed dramatically with the PC release, where the title enjoyed a strong debut on Steam.

This development has played a major role in shaping Square Enix’s future strategy. Hamaguchi himself stated in an early 2025 interview that, after seeing the success on PC, the company will start releasing new IPs simultaneously on consoles and PC. Ultimately, he believes that “we are no longer in an era where limiting a title to a single hardware platform leads to higher profits.”

The fact that ROG Xbox Ally X pre-orders have sold out on the Xbox Store is good news for Microsoft. Although we don’t yet know the production numbers or sales data, it appears the project is off to a strong start. Over time, we’ll get more details about its commercial performance and, more importantly, the overall gaming experience. After all, social media will likely be filled with players’ first impressions starting October 16.
