The Wild West Isn’t Done Yet – Red Dead Redemption 2 Overtakes Mario Kart 8 And Sets Sights On Wii Sports

Make room for a modern sales juggernaut – Red Dead Redemption 2 has slid past Mario Kart 8 and is now aiming at Wii Sports, standing as the fourth best-selling game ever and looking poised to climb again in 2026.

It’s not the cheeriest day for many – a few hours ago, GTA 6 was pushed to late 2026. That leaves more than a year before we can roam Rockstar’s next giant open world. Until then, October 2018’s Red Dead Redemption 2 remains the studio’s latest release, and it has ridden into the all-time sales elite.

At theGeek, we’ve tracked the all-time best-sellers closely – the biggest climber in recent years has been Red Dead Redemption 2. Months back, we noted it was closing in on Mario Kart 8. Now Take-Two’s financial report – see slide 12 – confirms Arthur Morgan’s saga has gained another rung.

Red Dead Redemption 2 has cleared 79 million units, topping the combined 78.02 million of Mario Kart 8/Deluxe on Wii U and Nintendo Switch. Rockstar’s western is bearing down on Wii Sports, which launched with the Wii in most markets worldwide – Japan excluded – and sits at 82.9 million. The once headline-grabbing totals of PUBG: Battlegrounds and Terraria – and their battle royale ripple effects – feel farther in the rearview.

The best-selling games of all time

Minecraft | 350 million

GTA 5 | 220 million

Wii Sports | 82.9 million

Red Dead Redemption 2 | 79 million

Mario Kart 8/Deluxe | 78.02 million

PUBG: Battlegrounds | 75 million

Terraria | 64-60 million

Skyrim | 60 million

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt | 60 million

Super Mario Bros. | 58 million

All signs suggest Red Dead Redemption 2 will become the third best-selling video game by 2026. It adds 2-3 million every quarter, so by April or May we could be reading the same headline again – this time with Wii Sports in the rear. The franchise total stands at 106 million to date and will keep climbing in the coming months. As for what’s next, little is certain – though Rockstar’s founder believes we’ll see a Red Dead Redemption 3 someday.

It isn’t just Red Dead growing – GTA 5 has reached 220 million, lifting the series to 460 million combined. Meanwhile, the steward of GTA 6 has reaffirmed ongoing support for Grand Theft Auto Online, and the GTA+ subscription is posting “magnificent results” – with membership up 20 percent year over year. You can also check sales updates for Borderlands 4, Mafia: The Old Country, and NBA 2K26.
