TECH NEWS – According to the judge presiding over the case, it’s hard to fathom that five years ago, the two companies were at each other’s throats; today, however, the opposite is true.
Epic Games has engaged in intense legal battles with Apple and Google for years. However, last week, it seemed that the era of fighting between Epic and Google was coming to an end. The two parties reached a settlement that satisfied everyone involved, and all that was needed was Chief Judge James Donato’s approval. The proposed agreement would make the Android platform more open and reduce Google Play service fees. Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney called the agreement a comprehensive resolution to the dispute that would finally end the legal battle between the two companies.
However, Judge Donato is not entirely convinced that he can approve the agreement. He still has concerns, including why Epic and Google suddenly became best friends after years of fierce legal battles. Beyond the fact that the two giant companies suddenly seem to be best friends, Judge Donato is concerned that the proposed settlement does not meet the legal threshold required for him to review the court’s ruling. In other words, according to Donato, the only change he currently sees is that Epic and Google, two companies that have been relentlessly attacking each other in court for years, are suddenly striking a different tone with each other.
Another hearing is expected in December or January, which will give Judge Donato time to review the proposed settlement and its possible consequences if he approves it in its current form. Nevertheless, we must acknowledge that there has indeed been a 180-degree turn: Epic Games had previously launched a crusade against the two tech giants. How times change.
