PlayStation 5: Lagging Behind Its Great-Grandfather in the United States!

PlayStation 5 sales in the United States are good but not the best. Sony’s console has yet to catch up with the record holder.

November 12 marked the fifth anniversary of the PlayStation 5’s release. On the 30th anniversary of the original PlayStation console’s release (in the West; it launched in Japan in December 1994), Mat Piscatella, Circana’s executive director and analyst, shared interesting lists of the best-selling games on PlayStation consoles. Piscatella did the same on the fifth anniversary of the PlayStation 5, and the results are quite similar.

Call of Duty appears three times among the five best-selling PlayStation 5 games in the United States since the console’s release. Piscatella also revealed that, compared to other PlayStation consoles released during the same period, the PlayStation 5 is the second fastest-selling console in PlayStation history in the United States, behind only the PlayStation 2. The PlayStation 2 still holds the record, and it’s possible that it won’t be dethroned. Taking lifetime sales into account, the Nintendo Switch could succeed, but it would need to reduce its price.

Three of the ten best-selling PlayStation 5 games are Call of Duty titles. Three are sports games released every three years. Three are first-party titles developed internally by PlayStation Studios. Two of the latter are from Insomniac Games, likely because Insomniac is one of the few PlayStation Studios teams to release new games in the last five years rather than just remasters or remakes.

It will be interesting to see how this list changes, if at all, by the end of the current generation. The PlayStation 5 could only achieve significant sales if its price were reduced. However, this hasn’t happened yet in this console generation. In fact, it’s only become more expensive since its release in 2020. Therefore, the likelihood of this happening is about as high as winning the lottery.

Still, she likes puzzle and story-oriented games, like Sherlock Holmes: Crimes & Punishments, which is her favourite title. She also played The Sims 3, but after accidentally killing a whole sim family, swore not to play it again. (For our office address, email and phone number check out our IMPRESSUM)
