TECH NEWS – To put it mildly, it’s not a good idea to buy RAM at the moment because prices are rising at an alarming rate.
It’s absurd that distributors are forcing customers to purchase a motherboard with every RAM module. The AI boom has caused such chaos in the hardware market that everyday users now have to pay twice as much for a module or kit as they normally would. If you’re shocked by the doubled prices, consider how much Samsung’s DDR5 memory costs in its home market of South Korea.
According to Danawa, which tracks South Korean retail prices, the price of Samsung Electronics’ DDR5-5600 16 GB module has more than tripled in the last three months. In August, the module cost 69,246 won (15,667 forint), but it is currently priced at 208,090 won (47,087 forint). The graph shows that the price increased steadily in August and September. At the end of October, prices began to rise dramatically, and at the beginning of November, the rate of increase accelerated. Some retailers are charging as much as 216,500 won (48,990 forint) for the module. A few months ago, you could get a premium 32 GB DDR5 kit for that price, but now you only get a standard module with a clock speed of 5,600 MT/s. We recently learned that Samsung raised the prices of its DRAM chips by nearly 60%.
Although DDR5 prices have risen sharply in other regions (mostly doubling), the DRAM shortage affects not only traditional desktop and laptop DDR RAM modules but also the prices of mini PCs, prebuilt PCs, and GPUs. There have recently been reports that AMD will soon raise the prices of its GPUs due to rising DRAM prices. This is the second such announcement since October. We don’t know how long this will last, but DRAM prices will continue to rise until we hear that AI demand is starting to cool.
Therefore, we can safely say that memory is selling at a premium these days.
