Steam Machine: Will Valve Deliver on Its Promise by Relying on AMD’s Upscaling Technology? [VIDEO]

TECH NEWS – Valve’s hardware will certainly not be able to achieve the promised resolution and frame rate.

According to an early analysis, the 4K@60 FPS experience promised by the Steam Machine relies heavily on AMD FSR and low settings. YouTuber The Phawx built a temporary Steam Machine using available components to mimic the system specifications as closely as possible. The components used are: an AMD Ryzen 7 8840U CPU with two cores and four threads disabled and a reduced clock speed; an AMD Radeon RX 7600M XT graphics card; and AMD Smart Access Memory to connect them, which is likely how the Steam Machine itself will be configured. Using this configuration, The Phawx verified claims that the Steam Machine is six times faster than the Steam Deck and can deliver 4K@60 FPS performance with AMD FSR.

Through testing, The Phawx confirmed that the Steam Machine will indeed be six times faster than the Steam Deck. In some GPU-bound tests, the hardware was 6.5 times faster than the handheld PC. However, this was due to the GPU being slightly more powerful and having a higher CU count, which allowed it to handle ray tracing better.

However, the second claim that AMD FSR delivers consistent 4K@60 FPS performance seems questionable based on these early tests. The only game that delivered a 4K resolution and 60 FPS experience was God of War: Ragnarök, which used Intel XeSS in Ultra Performance Mode with low settings. Other games, such as Warhammer 40K: Space Marines 2, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Starfield, and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, had mixed results. None ran at a 4K output resolution and 60 FPS, even in Ultra Performance mode with low settings. Some of them (e.g., Starfield) require a 30 FPS cap to provide an acceptable experience.

Although the Steam Machine does not offer the same 4K@60FPS experience as high-end hardware, Valve claims that the upcoming system will provide a significantly better experience than most gamers currently enjoy on their own systems. We have written about this before.
