In an interview, the game’s assistant director said that the latest installment of the French publisher’s most important franchise is unlikely to be expanded again, as was the case with Claws of Awaji.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows was the only bright spot in Ubisoft’s difficult period in recent years. Although it cannot compete with Ghost of Tsushima, which was released on the PlayStation 5, according to the company’s latest biannual results report, it is the latest Assassin’s Creed game. Ubisoft originally planned to release several add-ons for Shadows, but it appears that Claws of Awaji, released in September, will be the only add-on the game receives. Simon Lemay-Comtois, the game’s assistant director, confirmed in an interview with YouTuber JorRaptor that Ubisoft currently has no plans to release another expansion for Shadows of a similar size.
“Well, we live in a murky world these days. So, with the caveat that anything can happen in the future — as Assassin’s Creed Mirage just proved, and as the crossover stories from Assassin’s Creed Odyssey to Assassin’s Creed Valhalla before it did — things could come up in the future. But as of now, there is no expansion of that size planned for the second year. We’re still working on post-launch content and support, but it’s not full-on DLC like a season pass would have been in previous years. Whether or not this is the right way to go, I think it’s an experiment we’re trying with Shadows: keeping it small and reactive to see how the community feels about it. The lessons learned from that will be applied to whatever other projects we do next,” said Lemay-Comtois.
He added that in the first year, the team’s approach was to be as reactive as possible. However, in the second year, they can slow down because they no longer have to address urgent issues. Now, they can decide what content to release for Assassin’s Creed Shadows. Clearly, Ubisoft has changed its plans for the game. However, as Lemay-Comtois points out, anything can happen. It seems unlikely that there will be another expansion of a similar size for Shadows.
This change in direction may be due to the conclusion of the agreement between Ubisoft and Tencent, as well as the finalization of Vantage Studios. Now that the franchise is under the new subsidiary, it’s possible that all questions regarding its future, including that of Assassin’s Creed Shadows, will be reevaluated.
