MOVIE NEWS – Leonardo DiCaprio’s action thriller is already ripping through global streaming charts just weeks after landing online, with plenty of viewers calling it 2025’s movie of the year. After making noise in theaters, it’s now winning a second war on streaming – and it’s not slowing down.
Arguably, the best movie of 2025 is already surging up the global streaming charts, just weeks after its streaming debut. It’s certainly been a weird year for movies. The expected blockbusters, like three MCU entries and James Gunn’s Superman, underperformed compared to everyone’s expectations, while the films that deserved attention from viewers, like The Smashing Machine and If I Had Legs I Would Kick You, drastically underperformed. But one movie that grabbed audiences’ (and critics’) attention, and made a dent at the box office, Leonardo DiCaprio’s One Battle After Another, is waging a second war on streaming.
One Battle After Another is now streaming on HBO Max, and it’s safe to say that the movie is a streaming success. As well as being the number one movie on the platform in the US, One Battle After Another is the most popular movie on HBO Max globally. Viewers across the world are logging on to the streaming platform to witness Leonardo DiCaprio and Paul Thomas Anderson’s, expectedly, brilliant action thriller. We even hailed One Battle After Another as the best movie of 2025.
Paul Thomas Anderson adapted the script from the Thomas Pynchon novel Vineland. Leonardo DiCaprio leads as Bob, a former revolutionary who must return to the proverbial battlefield when their sworn enemy resurfaces after nearly two decades. Alongside DiCaprio, One Battle After Another also stars Sean Penn, Benicio del Toro, Teyana Taylor, Regina Hall, Wood Harris, Alana Haim, and Chase Infiniti. The official synopsis reads: “Bob is a washed-up revolutionary who lives in a state of stoned paranoia, surviving off-grid with his spirited and self-reliant daughter, Willa. When his evil nemesis resurfaces and Willa goes missing, the former radical scrambles to find her as both father and daughter battle the consequences of their pasts.”
Every year, there’s one movie that film fans know will completely dominate during awards season. While there will be some tough competition, most people predict that One Battle After Another will be that movie. The film has already won numerous accolades, including prizes at the Critics’ Choice Awards, and has received multiple Golden Globe nominations. The nominations for the 2026 Oscars will be announced on January 22, and One Battle After Another is almost guaranteed a swipe at the big prizes.
The film was adored by critics, holding a 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences were slightly more critical, giving the film an 85% rating. However, the movie only has around 5,000 user ratings, while most major movies have around 100,000, meaning that could change drastically in the future, especially with the film being a major streaming hit. “One Battle After Another grabs you and doesn’t let go. It’s one of those films that reenters your mind long after you’ve watched it, and it’s so relevant for today,” read one user review, while another person wrote: “This was a good movie to watch. The action was peak and chase scenes were awesome. The actors were good choices in this film. Its good entertainment, although some scenes were a little political but it was not that bad. I enjoyed this film by the way. Thanks for putting it on HBO max.”
