God of War’s Greek Trilogy Is Getting a Remake, and Sons of Sparta Is Out Now [VIDEO]
The State of Play delivered a double twist to close out the final stretch of God of War’s 20th anniversary run: Santa Monica Studio confirmed the original Greek trilogy is being remade, and God of War: Sons of Sparta is available starting today on PlayStation 5. The studio also notes the remake is only in its earliest stages and asks for patience. By contrast, the spin-off isn’t making anyone wait: it’s already on sale in two digital editions.
The first God of War launched in March 2005 on PlayStation 2, setting Kratos on his journey through Ancient Greece. With the 20th anniversary year due to conclude in March 2026, Santa Monica Studio chose to make one last statement during the State of Play. In a post published on the PlayStation Blog, community lead Grace Orlady officially confirms that a remake of the original trilogy is in development, announced alongside TC Carson, the iconic voice of Kratos in the Greek-era saga. The message is clear: the project is still very early in production, and it will take time before more information is shared. The studio says it wants to return with an update only when it can show something truly substantial – until then, there will be no further details.
God of War III arrived in 2010.
The remake logically targets the core of the Greek era: God of War (2005), God of War II, and God of War III (2010). Santa Monica Studio emphasizes that a modern return of the classic entries has been a recurring request from fans, and frames this effort as a way to invest in the series’ roots – while accepting that it will take time. Meanwhile, the second announcement is immediate.
Developed with Mega Cat Studios, God of War: Sons of Sparta is a 2D action-platformer with a canonical story set during Kratos’ youth, through the brutal training of the agogè, alongside his brother Deimos. According to the presentation, the narrative is written by Santa Monica Studio’s writing team, which previously worked on God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarök. TC Carson speaks for the first time in more than a decade, this time as a narrator embodying an adult Kratos. On the gameplay side, the formula shifts into a new genre while keeping the series’ impact: spear-and-shield combat, and the use of divine artifacts known as the Gifts of Olympus.
The game also promises the return of reinterpreted classics in 2D with hand-drawn pixel art animation, while introducing new creatures inspired by lesser-explored facets of Greek mythology. God of War: Sons of Sparta is available starting today on PlayStation 5 via the PlayStation Store, in two digital editions: Standard Edition at 29.99 USD / 29.99 EUR / 24.99 GBP / 3480 JPY, and Digital Deluxe Edition at 39.99 USD / 39.99 EUR / 32.99 GBP / 4480 JPY.
