Chrono Trigger Remake May Already Be in Development, Insider Claims

A well-known insider has suggested that a Chrono Trigger remake is already in the works, after a year of false alarms fueled by mistranslations and misread comments.

Over the past year, talk of a potential Chrono Trigger remake has repeatedly surfaced, only for fans to be disappointed when the stories turned out to be either mistranslations or general “considerations” tied to comments from Yuji Horii – the Dragon Quest creator who also served as one of the classic game’s writers. This time, however, WCCFTech points to a remark attributed to an insider with a long track record of accurate game-related information.

The claim appeared in a ResetERA thread discussing a recent Square Enix survey shared by Team Asano, the studio behind Octopath Traveler and one of the teams most closely associated with the HD-2D visual style. In that conversation, insider John Harker dropped a brief line that immediately reignited remake hopes.

“The Chrono stuff is already in dev tho. Let’s ask for something else, like opening back up Triangle Strategy 2 or a legit sequel to Final Fantasy Tactics,” the insider wrote.

When another user responded that he had “said the quiet part out loud,” Harker replied with “Wouldn’t be the first time,” effectively doubling down. Beyond that, there were no concrete details: he did not indicate whether the project would be HD-2D, a more traditional enhanced remaster, or a different style of full remake.

Why This Rumor Is Being Taken More Seriously

WCCFTech notes that a random public post would normally carry little weight, but argues that Harker has spent nearly a decade sharing information that later checked out – including details around specific Assassin’s Creed titles and timing windows for showcases such as State of Play and Nintendo Direct. Even with that history, the outlet stresses the obvious: until something is made official, the story still needs to be treated cautiously.

The article also frames the rumor in a broader context: if a Chrono Trigger remake is real, it would be a major moment for the genre, given how influential the original game has been on subsequent Japanese role-playing games. And if it does exist, the hope is that it does not drift into the same long-running, perpetually teased limbo often associated with the heavily rumored Final Fantasy IX remake.
