Activision Pulls the Plug on a Long-Dreamed Call of Duty Zombies Spin-Off

It was a dream project for many Call of Duty fans, but Activision has now directly shut down the rumors. The US publisher says there is no standalone Zombies game currently in development.

Ever since Nacht der Untoten arrived in the now-classic Call of Duty: World at War, the shooter series has had a split audience: players who show up for competitive multiplayer, and players who come for Zombies. The undead mode has traditionally been tied to Treyarch, though over time it spread across other Activision studios as well – with mixed results. That is exactly why so many fans have spent years asking for a full-scale standalone Zombies title, and while the latest rumor suggested that might finally happen, Activision has now denied it.

In an unusually direct reply posted from the official Call of Duty account on X (formerly Twitter), the company rejected the idea that a project focused exclusively on this mode is currently in the works. The timing matters too: although Black Ops 7 is still performing strongly in sales, its critical reception and part of the community response have reportedly pushed Xbox-owned Activision to reassess its annual release cadence.

Under those circumstances, a standalone Zombies release sounded like a plausible way to refresh the franchise while offering something clearly distinct – especially since players have been asking for it for a long time. According to the rumor, the game was even expected to launch alongside the next Xbox, which implied a major dedicated production rather than just another side mode folded into future Call of Duty entries.

Activision moved quickly to stop the rumor from snowballing

The denial drew extra attention because it is uncommon for official Call of Duty social channels to address a specific rumor this bluntly. Messages like that usually pass through multiple internal checks, which gives the comment more weight and suggests a deliberate effort to contain the discussion before it spiraled further.

For now, the future of Call of Duty remains somewhat uncertain after a commercially successful release that still left part of the fanbase unconvinced. While players continue debating whether a standalone Zombies game would make sense, attention is already shifting toward the franchise’s next major move. Many assume Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is the likely next step, especially after Infinity Ward – the series’ lead studio – publicly hinted at it with a “see you in 2026” message.
