Top Gun Turns 40 and Returns to Theaters – and Top Gun 3 Is Still Very Much in the Picture

MOVIE NEWS – Paramount Pictures has confirmed that 1986’s Top Gun is getting a wide theatrical re-release in 2026: the 40th anniversary run begins on May 13, 2026, landing just days from the film’s original May 16, 1986 premiere.

This marks the movie’s fourth major theatrical push. After the original release, there was a 3D run in 2013, followed by pre-release screenings tied to the ramp-up for Top Gun: Maverick in 2021. Now the anniversary campaign puts the franchise’s foundation back on the big screen – and it is unlikely to be driven by nostalgia alone.

Industry watchers see the anniversary rollout as a market test as much as a celebration: a way for Paramount to measure how much theatrical pull the brand still has, while Top Gun 3 remains in development with Joseph Kosinski attached. A strong anniversary performance could accelerate the next steps, so the wait for Maverick’s next mission doesn’t stretch into another multi-decade gap.
