Grand Theft Auto VI: Could the Game’s Source Code Also Leak?

It cannot be ruled out that Rockstar’s repeatedly delayed game could end up falling victim to an even nastier leak – one that would be extremely painful for publisher Take-Two as well.

The person behind the infamous Grand Theft Auto VI leak has reportedly said they are surprised the game’s source code hasn’t surfaced online, implying someone out there may still have it. Arion Kurtaj, a British cybercriminal and core member of the Lapsus$ hacking group – which carried out high-profile attacks on major tech companies including Nvidia, Uber, Microsoft, and Rockstar Games – allegedly revealed that he received a smartphone at the hospital where he is being held indefinitely.

Lapsus$ was responsible for the 2022 Grand Theft Auto VI leak, widely regarded as one of the biggest in games (arguably rivalled only by cases like DOOM III or Half-Life 2). More than 90 videos were posted, showing an early-stage build, debug footage running on developer tools, Vice City-inspired locations, and early gameplay systems such as robberies, NPC AI, police responses, weapon systems, and more.

Kurtaj allegedly gained access through Rockstar’s internal Slack workspaces using compromised credentials tied to a Rockstar employee. From there, he accessed links pointing to internal developer servers and downloaded the gameplay clips. Kurtaj also claimed he had the source code for both Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto VI.

On Twitter, Ben – an account that frequently posts Rockstar Games-related news – claims he spoke with Kurtaj, who was recently released from hospital and allegedly smuggled a smartphone into prison. According to the messages, Kurtaj was surprised the Grand Theft Auto VI source code hasn’t leaked, and insisted it must be out there somewhere. That would suggest someone has access to it – they just haven’t dumped it online yet.

If it happens, it will be a spectacularly bad look.
