MOVIE NEWS – Interest is running high for the upcoming Michael Jackson biopic, which is about to hit theaters.
A record number of advance tickets have been sold through Fandango, AMC, and the production’s official website. Demand is especially strong for the film’s IMAX screenings. Since the counter is still ticking upward, there is no precise figure in circulation for pre-sales according to the film blog World of Reel, but as a point of comparison, one thing is already clear: the total is far higher than what the previous genre record-holder, Bohemian Rhapsody, managed. Based on the heavy interest, industry analysts are projecting an $80-90 million opening weekend in North America, while adding that the international haul over the same frame could be even larger, because the King of Pop still commands even greater popularity in certain regions – Western Europe and Latin America among them – than he does in his home country.
Michael follows the global superstar’s beginnings and rise, from his years in the Jackson Five family group to the release of the breakthrough album Bad. Director Antoine Fuqua – the The Equalizer franchise, Training Day, Emancipation – reportedly assembled nearly four hours of material, with the first two hours making up the film now known as Michael. According to industry reports, the release of the follow-up – meaning the other nearly two-hour film – will depend on how the first part performs in theaters. Executives at producer Lionsgate are watching the numbers closely. With the outlook looking more than promising, it seems highly likely that Michael Part Two will also reach cinemas before long.
